certificate as to the cause of death.
The body having already been despatched from
Hamburg, I requested the Chinese Minister to supply
me with the name of the ship, and have now been
informed that the case containing the coffin left
Hamburg for Hongkong by the "Saxonia", and is
marked W.S.H, and addressed to the China Merchant
Steam Navigation Company at Shanghae.
It appears that owing to the unsettled state
In
of affairs, the shipping company refused to under-
take to take the coffin further than Hongkong.
the event of communication with Shanghae being
open, it will not be necessary to land it at Hong-
kong at all, but in the contrary case a permission
to land and re-ship it would be necessary and I am
consequently transmitting to Your Lordship the
Chinese Minister's request that the requisite per-
mission may be communicated by telegraph by the
Colonial Office to the proper authorities at Hong-
kong.
(Signed)
I have, &c.,
Charles S. Scott.
